Gunmen on Monday attacked a convoy of a former governor of Imo State, Ikedi Ohakim, and reportedly killed four of his police details in the process.

The convoy was said to have been attacked at Oriagu in Ehime Mbano Local Government Area of the state on Monday.

Ohakim, who escaped narrowly, had his backup vehicle attacked, leading to the death of the four policemen.

Our correspondent gathered that Ohakim was with two of his children and was returning from a visit when the gunmen struck.

A source close to the ex-governor, who did not want his name in print because he has not been authorised to speak to journalists on the matter, “His Excellency was the main target but his driver was smart enough to beat them because they were driving to block him.

“Disappointed that their main target had escaped, they blocked his backup vehicle and burnt it. The four policemen with him were burnt.”

Our correspondent gathered that reinforcement came from Owerri, the state capital and escorted the former governor to his house.

Ohakim, who sounded sober, confirmed the attack to our correspondent on the telephone.

Efforts made to get the reaction of the spokesperson for the police in the state, Michael Abattam, proved abortive as he had yet to return calls made to his telephone line as of the time of filing this report.
