Abia State Government on Thursday congratulated former Chief of Army Staff, Azubike Ihejirika, as he attains the age of 70, describing him as a “titan of discipline” and a critical pillar in the state’s evolving security architecture.
A statement issued by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, lauded the retired lieutenant general for his distinguished military career and continued service to Abia State after retirement.
Ihejirika, who served as Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff from 2010 to 2014, was commended for his professionalism, strategic depth and commitment to national unity during his years in the **Nigerian Army.
The government noted that his retirement from active military service marked “the beginning of a renewed chapter of service closer to home,” as he has since taken on advisory and strategic responsibilities within Abia’s security framework.
Under the administration of Governor Alex Otti, Ihejirika has headed one of the state’s critical security committees, bringing intelligence-driven coordination and structured inter-agency collaboration to efforts aimed at combating criminality.
According to the statement, his guidance has strengthened proactive security measures across the state, improved synergy among security agencies and supported operational gains recorded in recent times.
“Security remains the bedrock of development, and it takes men of courage, clarity and conviction to fortify that foundation,” the statement read, attributing part of the state’s improved security landscape to the contributions of experienced figures like Ihejirika.
The government also acknowledged that long before the present administration, the retired general consistently offered expert counsel on matters relating to safety, community vigilance and security reforms in Abia.
Describing him as “a bridge between experience and action,” the statement added that his life affirms that public service does not end with retirement but evolves into new forms of leadership and mentorship.
The state government wished the elder statesman renewed strength, good health and continued opportunities for service to Abia and Nigeria. Ihejirika turned 70 on February 13, 2026.
