Former Vice President of Nigeria, Yemi Osinbajo, has commended Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, for what he described as purposeful and people-centred leadership that is repositioning the state for sustainable growth and prosperity.
A press statement signed by Ctz. Ukoha Njoku Ukoha, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Otti, noted that Osinbajo spoke on Wednesday, February 18, during a courtesy visit to the Governor at his office in Umuahia. The visit coincided with Otti’s 61st birthday. The former Vice President said the essence of public service lies in delivering measurable improvements in the lives of citizens, noting that Otti’s administration has demonstrated that governance can indeed be impactful.
“I am extremely proud of the work you have done so far. You have lived up to expectations — not only to the people but also to your friends and associates. In the short time I have been here, I have seen tangible evidence of progress,” Osinbajo said.
He particularly praised the Governor’s bold social welfare initiatives, including the signing into law of the Senior Citizens’ Law, describing the reform as compassionate and reflective of global best practices.
“The most successful societies are those that prioritise the welfare of the vulnerable,” he noted, adding that Abia’s approach to social protection signals responsible and inclusive governance.
Osinbajo also lauded the ongoing road infrastructure renewal and improved connectivity across the state, describing the projects as visible proof of results-driven leadership.
Reflecting on the rigours of public office, the former Vice President observed that while many seek political power, true leadership is defined by performance.
“Sometimes you wonder whether, after all the efforts to get into office, leaders can fulfil their promises. But in your case, you have not just done what you promised, but even more. You have made public service worthwhile,” he added.
He prayed for renewed strength, wisdom, and divine favour for the Governor as he continues what he called a transformational journey in Abia.
Responding, Governor Otti described Osinbajo as a brother, friend, and mentor, expressing gratitude for what he called a deeply encouraging visit.
He clarified that the gathering was not a formal birthday celebration but merely a quiet observance of the day, noting that he rarely marks such occasions publicly while in office.
The Governor thanked well-wishers who came voluntarily and reiterated his belief in modesty and service over personal fanfare.
Reflecting on his administration’s record within 32 months, Otti described the achievements as “modest but impactful,” stressing that governance must always prioritise citizens’ welfare and security.
“Governance is about the people, their welfare, their safety, and their peace of mind. If you enter the office for any other reason, you miss the essence of leadership,” he said.
He recalled decisive interventions undertaken in the first month of his administration when some local government areas were allegedly under the control of non-state actors. According to him, firm action restored order and reopened previously inaccessible communities.
Otti also commended security agencies for their dedicationton maintaining peace across the state.
“We are grateful to the men and women who stay awake so that our people can sleep in peace,” the Governor said.
Earlier, the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Emmanuel Meribole, conveyed birthday wishes on behalf of the State Executive Council, praying for continued strength and fruitful years ahead for the Governor.
Representatives of leading financial institutions, including Access Bank, First Bank, and UBA also described Otti as a model of credible and ethical leadership at a time the nation seeks inspiring examples of public service. They said his administration has set a benchmark for excellence, demonstrating that visionary leadership can deliver measurable change.
The goodwill messages were accompanied by prayers for sound health and greater accomplishments as the Governor continues what supporters describe as the rebuilding of a new Abia.
