Commissioner of Police (CP) in Ebonyi, Mr Philip Maku has called for transparency and accountability in the recruitment exercise of 774,000 Nigerians by the federal government under its Special Public Works Programme, geared towards cushioning the effects of the Novel COVID-19 pandemic.

This call follows a revelation by the Minister of State Labour, Festus Keyamo (SAN), that he had secured the approval of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) to begin the recruitment of 774, 000 Nigerian youths.

The CP made the call in Abakaliki, the state capital, during the inauguration of Ebonyi State Selection Committee of the Special Public Works Programme.

Maku, who was represented by the Assistant Commissioner of Police in-charge of operations in the state Police command, Umaru  Orji,  said, “The CP is advising that the selection programme for Eboyians who are going to partake in this exercise should be very much transparent.

“He advised also that only those that show interest and have applied should be considered. Let it not be a situation that those who applied; who are interested, who are willing to work, who have the zeal will be left behind and probably, it will be hijacked.

“He also advised that only those who are willing to do the job and can deliver to the expectation of the federal government should be considered.”

Inaugurating the committee, its Chairman in Ebonyi State, Chief Edward Nkwegu stated that 13,000 persons would benefit from the programme in the state.

He noted that those that would be recruited would be engaged in roads rehabilitation and social housing construction, urban and rural sanitation, health extension and other critical services.

“The 1,000 persons we will recruit per local government would be engaged by the federal government between October and December this year to carry out public works that are peculiar to each local government area. They would be paid a total of N60, 000 each, that is N20, 000 per month amounting to seven hundred and eighty million naira(N780,000,000) in three months in Ebonyi state only.

“The federal government will not hesitate to remove and replace any member of the committee that do not adhere strictly to guidelines given to the committee or acts in such a way and manner as to undermine the popular of this programme,” Nkwegu said.
